There are two problems with stressing the extremes:
- It depicts the travellers like heroes, because they “survive” dirt and chaos.
- The travellers consider themselves free, able to do anything they couldn’t do at home.
We are not heroes! People live this kind of life every day and it is nothing to be praised for.
We are not free! We are responsible for many of the extreme situations because of our way of consumption and due to political relations in our home country. The situation or misery of others is not “naturally given”. We stand in direct relation to their exploitation.
